for oa, articles tend to be published faster, as they do not have to wait in the queue pending the journal’s standard release schedule and are put online immediately. this is the best option when expedited publishing is required.
issue-based articles are given a physical copy in addition to the online availability for subscribers. this is the best option for authors who want a physical copy of their articles in libraries worldwide.
both publication modes are indexed by the same databases and go through the submission-to-acceptance process at the same rate. the main difference is how the articles themselves are disseminated.
